About this calculator

Your age in years, months and days depends on the real calendar, not on an average month length, because February is short and leap years add a day every four years. This calculator counts forward from your date of birth through actual months, then reports the same span converted into total days, weeks, months and hours. It also tells you which weekday you were born on and how long you have to wait for your next birthday.

How to use this calculator

    This is the headline figure and the one people mean by "exact age". Each component is a completed unit, so 33 years 8 months 15 days means all three have fully elapsed.

    The same span appears below in total days, weeks, months and hours. These are conversions of one span, not separate measurements, so they will not sum together.

Exact age is counted, not divided: 1. Advance whole months from the birth date until the next step would overshoot the target date. 2. years = whole months / 12, rounded down months = whole months remaining after the years days = days from that anchor point to the target date Single-unit totals: total days = (target - birth) / 86,400,000 ms total weeks = total days / 7, rounded down total hours = total days x 24
  • Whole months are advanced one at a time against the real calendar, so a 31st clamps to the 28th, 29th or 30th when the target month is shorter rather than spilling into the next month.
  • Dividing total days by 30.44 gives an approximate month count that drifts by several days over a lifetime. That shortcut is not used anywhere here.
  • Dates are handled in UTC throughout. A date treated as local midnight can shift by a full day either side of a timezone boundary, which would make the same birthday return different ages in different countries.
  • The day component can never exceed 30, and the month component can never exceed 11, because anything larger is absorbed into the next unit up.
  • Total weeks are floored: at 12,313 days the figure is 1,759 whole weeks, with no partial week reported alongside it.
  • A birth date after the target date produces no age at all. Rather than returning a negative number, the calculator explains that the date is in the future.

Someone born on 15 June 1990 is 33 years, 8 months and 15 days old on 1 March 2024. That is 12,313 days, 1,759 whole weeks or 295,512 hours, and their 34th birthday is 106 days away on a Saturday.

What the result means

  • The years, months and days figure is a completed count. On the day before a birthday the year figure is still the old one, which is exactly how legal age is determined in most jurisdictions.
  • The single-unit totals are alternative views of one elapsed span. Total days, total weeks and total months all describe the same interval, so adding them together is meaningless.
  • The weekday of birth is computed from the actual Gregorian calendar, so it stays correct for any date, including ones centuries in the past.
  • The days-until-next-birthday count is measured from the target date forward and can be anything from 0, on the birthday itself, up to 366 after a leap-day birthday.

Frequently asked questions

How is exact age calculated?

Whole months are counted forward from the date of birth until one more month would pass the target date. Those months are divided by twelve to give years with a remainder in months, and the leftover days are measured from that point. Counting this way respects real month lengths, so a birth date of 31 January behaves sensibly when the target month has only 28 or 30 days.

Why does my age in months not equal my age in years times twelve exactly?

It does, by construction: the total-months figure here is always the year count multiplied by twelve plus the leftover months. What does not line up is total months against total days divided by thirty, because calendar months vary between 28 and 31 days. Any figure derived from an average month length will disagree with a properly counted one, and the gap widens the longer the span.

How does the calculator handle a 29 February birthday?

In leap years the birthday falls on 29 February as normal. In common years there is no such date, so the calculator observes it on 1 March, which is the convention most legal systems use for determining when a year has been completed. That means someone born on 29 February 2000 is treated as having completed 23 years by 28 February 2023 and observes the occasion the following day.

How many days old am I?

The total-days figure is the count of whole days between your date of birth and the target date, including every leap day along the way. A person who has lived exactly 44 years from 1 January 1980 to 1 January 2024 has seen 16,071 days: forty-four lots of 365 plus the eleven leap days that fell inside that window. Multiply by 24 to convert it into hours.

Why is my age different from what I calculated by hand?

The usual cause is subtracting the birth year from the current year, which overstates the age by one for anyone whose birthday has not yet come round this year. The second most common cause is approximating a month as 30 days. This calculator avoids both by comparing full dates and stepping through real calendar months.

Can I calculate my age on a past or future date?

Yes. The second field defaults to today but accepts any date you like, so you can find out how old you were when a particular event happened or how old you will be on some future occasion. The calculation is identical in both directions, and the birth date simply has to fall on or before whatever target date you choose.

Does the calculator account for time of day or timezone?

No, and deliberately so. Only whole calendar dates are used, and everything is evaluated in UTC, so the result is identical wherever you happen to be. Adding a birth time would make the age shift as you travel between timezones, which is not what anyone means when they ask how old someone is.

Why can I not enter a date of birth in the future?

An age is the amount of time that has already elapsed since birth, so a date that has not arrived yet has no age associated with it. Rather than showing a negative number that would look like a defect, the calculator explains the problem.
